High School Softball Results

Weatherford softball player at bat against Elk City during the district championship game.

Yesterday saw an intense district championship game in Weatherford, featuring the Elk City Elkettes taking on the Weatherford Lady Eagles. The Elkettes needed to win by two or more runs to secure the district title, but Marley Teasley had different plans. The Weatherford senior threw a complete game shutout, leading the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 victory. Teasley allowed only two hits, striking out 13 batters while walking three.

On the offensive side, freshman Addie Blackwell smashed a solo home run for the Lady Eagles. Elk City’s Aubrie Pogue also went the distance in the circle, giving up three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Despite the loss, the Elkettes finish second and will host a regional, while Weatherford moves on to host both a regional and likely a super-regional tournament.

Smaller Schools’ Fast-Pitch Results

As the district tournaments approach for smaller schools, here are a few key results:

  • Arapaho-Butler (AB) edged out Arnett, winning 1-0.
  • Cheyenne shut out Canute 2-0.
  • Duke overpowered Blair with a 24-2 victory.
  • Cordell topped Granite, 11-5.
  • Merritt upset Navajo 5-1.

MLB Penant Chases Heating Up

The Major League Baseball regular season is wrapping up with only a few games remaining. Four out of six division races have already been decided:

  • In the American League, the Cleveland Guardians clinched the Central Division, while the Houston Astros secured the West. The Yankees’ magic number is just one to clinch the AL East.
  • Over in the National League, Philadelphia and Milwaukee have locked up the East and Central divisions, respectively. The Dodgers hold a two-game lead over the Padres with five games left, and the two teams face off tonight and tomorrow.

Wild Card Races

The Wild Card race is still up for grabs. In the American League, Baltimore has already clinched one of the three Wild Card spots. Kansas City and Detroit are two games ahead of Minnesota for the final two spots, with Seattle trailing by three. In the National League, San Diego has secured a Wild Card berth, and the Mets lead the Braves and Diamondbacks by a single game. One of those three teams will be left out entirely.

Chicago White Sox: Nearing Baseball Infamy?

On the other end of the spectrum, the Chicago White Sox are one loss away from setting a Major League Baseball record for the worst season in history. Their current record stands at 37-120 with five games remaining. One more loss would seal their fate in the record books.
