Local High Schools Advance to 2nd Round of the Playoffs
The Elk City Elks traveled to Cushing on Friday night for the first round of the high school playoffs against the Tigers.
The Elks controlled most of the first half action, but only held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first half.
On the 3rd play of the second half, the Big Elk passing attack hit a big play…. Culver to Hughes from 72 yards put the Elks up 14-0. Cushing wouldn’t go away though. A 47 yard passing Touch Down from Cushing Quarterback, Blaze Burlowitz, to Camden Crooks cut the lead in half. Burlowitz hit Crooks a few minutes later on a 66 yard Touch Down connection and the game was tied as we headed to the 4th.
After Hughes pinned Cushing deep in their own territory, the Big Elk defense forced a punt and the Elks took over at the Cushing 38 yard line. The Elks marched it right down the field, and Cory Culver scored on a 2 yard Quarterback sneak to make it 21-14 Elks with just over 4 minutes left.
Cushing moved the ball down to the Elk City 21, 2nd and 3 with 43 seconds left….. Mason Price’s interception sealed the first playoff win for the Elk City Elks since 2006.
Daylan Thompson was a workhorse with 24 carries and 106 yards. The Elks outrushed the Tigers 246-75 and controlled the clock most of the night.
Elk City will travel to Grove Friday night for their second round matchup. Watch it live on BigElkTV.
Over in Clinton, the Red Tornadoes started slow but blew away Harrah 41-14. Clinton will host Bristow in round 2.
The Pirates pounded Broken Bow 55-6 in their first round game.
Down in Class A playoff action, Burns Flat-Dill City eliminated Mangum 50-34. The BFDC Eagles led by 6 at half then pulled away in the second half for the upset win.
Burns Flat-Dill City will host Elmore City-Pernell in round two Friday night at Burns Flat.
