A Texas man was injured in a one vehicle accident Monday morning after failing to negotiate a curve on the west side of Elk City.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident occurred just after 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Route 66, three miles west of Elk City. OHP says 61-year-old Vernon Shelton of Allison, Texas failed to negotiate a curve at a high rate of speed while driving a 2014 Ford F-250, struck a ditch and went airborne across both eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 66 before overturning one time.

Shelton was airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with a leg and internal injuries. The report did not list his condition.

OHP says the condition of the pickup is still under investigation. Officials say Shelton was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
