A Las Vegas man lost his gamble with stop sticks recently during a pursuit in Beckham County.

Unlike most pursuits, this one was low speed, at times 20 miles per hour under the speed limit on Interstate 40.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on March 2 56-year-old Albert Carraway lead multiple departments from both Texas and Oklahoma on a pursuit that originated in Texas. The court document stated that Beckham County Sheriff’s Deputies picked up the pursuit once the Volkswagen Jetta entered Oklahoma on eastbound I-40.

Carraway allegedly was traveling anywhere between 45 to 55 miles per hour while authorities attempted to stop the vehicle with stop sticks.

Eventually, stop sticks would disable the vehicle near the 20 mile-marker, where Carraway was placed under arrest without incident.

It was noted that the suspect had a strong smell of chemicals coming off of his body, and that he did not know his name or why he was being arrested.

Carraway was charged in Beckham Count District Court with two counts of running a roadblock, one count of eluding or attempting to elude a police officer, and one count of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.

Bond for Carraway was set at $20,000.
