During the latest Custer County Commissioner meeting held Monday morning, commissioners approved American Rescue Plan Act funding for use in the County Clerk’s office.

According to Commissioners those funds will now be used towards preservation and scanning of land record documents.

County Clerk Melissa Graham told the Commissioners that she thinks her office can scan over 700 books dating all the way back to the 1940s at a cost of $350,000.

She said by doing this, it will create a backup for the books, and create room in the already packed office.

Officials say the county will continue using its existing program to provide an online database of land records with the funds approved. Graham concluded by saying that new digital system will provide an easier way for one to look up land records and will provide another means of income for the county.

Commissioners also discussed the recent acquisition of the Custer County Election Board Office in Clinton saying they are now in full ownership of the building.

They also received a report from Emergency Management Director Mike Galloway regarding the county’s safe room project saying that FEMA has approved the county’s application. He said now he’s working with the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management and SWODA to determine who within Custer County will be awarded the safe rooms.
