Despite some recent rains, western Oklahoma and the surrounding area remains under high fire danger reported the Oklahoma Forestry Division.

In a statement on Thursday, the Division said, “a red flag warning is in effect Thursday in the western panhandle with potential for a broader warned area on Friday in western Oklahoma. A dryline will push further into western Oklahoma on Friday ramping up fire behavior potential while isolated storms may develop east of the dryline ahead of a cold front moving into the Oklahoma Friday night.”

Meanwhile the National Weather Service in Norman has gone ahead and issued a fire weather watch for Friday from 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The Forestry Division went on to say that elevated to near-critical fire weather will persist in western Oklahoma through the weekend and into next week, and that Oklahoma Forestry Services will preposition Suppression Groups in Woodward and Weatherford through the weekend.
