SWOSU Press Release

Colter Esparza, a student in the Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) Department of Biological and Biomedical Science, has been awarded 3rd place for his presentation, “Beyond sugar: what pancreatic cancer cells need to grow?” at the 29th Annual OK-LSAMP Research Symposium. The event was held on Sept. 23 at the Wes Watkins Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Fellow SWOSU Biology students Malachi Newton and Darren Powers were co-authors on the presentation with their mentor, Dr. Pragya Sharma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at SWOSU.

OK-LSAMP (The Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) is a National Science Foundation-funded consortium of 12 Oklahoma colleges and universities working together to promote diversity in STEM fields, increasing the number of underrepresented groups. The symposium featured a keynote address by Brandon Postoak, D.O., a former LSAMP scholar on his journey to his current position as an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician at Integers Southwest Medical Center in OKC. Additionally, students participated in a panel discussion led by former OK-LSAMP scholars, offering insight and advice to their peers.

SWOSU is proud of this achievement and celebrates the outstanding work emerging consistently from the Department of Biological and Biomedical Science.
