A bizarre story out of Custer County where a man was arrested after allegedly attempting to run over people while driving a vehicle near Riverside Golf Course in Clinton.

According to court records, 67-year-old Charles Kirby Funderburgh was charged last month with driving while under the influence of alcohol and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after a probable cause affidavit showed that he allegedly attempted to run over people on March 15.

The affidavit said that Clinton Police were made aware of the incident and an officer was able to initiate a traffic stop on the driver. The court document said that during the traffic stop the officer noted that the driver, Funderburgh, may have been under the influence of alcohol.

After failing a field sobriety test, the defendant was placed under arrest.

Witnesses would tell police that Funderburgh nearly missed hitting a golfer during the incident.

There were no reported injuries, or reported damage to the golf course itself.

Funderburgh’s next court date, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled for May 3.
