In yesterday’s (January 14) election, Elk City voters overwhelmingly approved two key propositions that will significantly shape the city’s future management of resources and services.

Proposition 1, addressing the allocation of revenue from the sale, marketing, and production of city-owned oil, gas, and other minerals, received resounding support. With 86.73% of the 196 total votes cast in favor, the measure establishes the “Infrastructure Endowment Fund,” managed by the Elk City Public Works Authority. The fund will preserve the principal for long-term growth, while 80% of its interest will be allocated to critical infrastructure improvements, including streets, water, and sewer systems.

Proposition 2, concerning Ordinance No. 1267, also passed with strong voter backing. Securing 86.22% of the 196 total votes, the measure grants One Gas, Inc., a 25-year franchise to operate a natural gas distribution system through its Oklahoma Natural Gas Company Division. This franchise agreement ensures continued access to reliable natural gas services for Elk City residents.

Meanwhile, Clinton voters made a pivotal decision about the future of Clinton Regional Hospital. In a vote to finalize the sale of the hospital to Rural Hospital Solutions, 94.71% of voters approved the proposition, signaling broad support for the $6 million agreement. This sale, which includes property management and operational responsibilities, is expected to relieve the city of financial burdens while expanding medical services in the region.

The hospital reopened in October 2023 after a 10-month closure due to financial challenges, and the sale marks a crucial step in securing its future.

Yesterday’s decisive results demonstrate strong community support for measures aimed at improving infrastructure, utility management, and healthcare services in Elk City and Clinton.
