A special meeting of the Clinton City Council was held Friday night that saw the council act on the submitted letter of resignation from city manager Mark Skiles.

After meeting in executive session, the council unanimously agreed to accept the letter and allow Skiles to use accrued sick leave until August 7, which will be his final day as a city employee.

According to the Clinton Daily News, Skiles’ resignation letter stated that he would no longer oversee day-to-day operations from now until his last day in August.

It was not addressed at the meeting as to who would assume the city manager position on an interim basis or when the search for Skiles successor would take place.

No word as to why Skiles chose to step down, however during the latest city council meeting last week, there was a disagreement as to who had the authority to re-open city buildings that have been closed since late March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
