Authorities successfully defused a volatile situation last week where an individual had threatened to harm himself.

Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning said the incident occurred in a home just outside of Elk City on Wednesday night when the man called authorities saying that he planned to hurt himself, and said if authorities arrived he would shoot at them in an attempt to be fatally shot by return fire.

Manning said the man was in the home alone and said he was able to have constant contact with the man before being able to de-escalate the situation.

Manning said after they made entry into the home, they found the man passed out – unharmed.

The man was taken into custody and received medical attention.

Sheriff Manning says Elk City P.D., Elk City Fire and EMS deserve credit in coordinating with his office in handling the situation.
