March 1, 2024

Fire crews battled a church fire near Butler and thanks to their efforts and the weather they may have prevented another bad wildfire from spreading.

The fire occurred at the German Free Will Baptist Church northwest of the Custer County community at noon on Thursday and saw crews from the Butler, Leedey, Custer City, Clinton, and Weatherford Fire Departments respond to put out the blaze before it could spread to a nearby pasture.

Crews also credit Thursday’s cooler weather that brought with it rain, sleet, and snow as a reason the fire did not spread to the grassland as fast as it could have.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
