A two-vehicle collision on US Highway 83, approximately six miles north of Shamrock, Texas, resulted in the death of a Kansas man. The crash occurred on December 17, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.

According to authorities, the crash involved a 2001 Toyota Sequoia driven by 62-year-old Ronald Tompkins of Ford, Kansas, and a 2014 John Deere cotton stripper operated by 33-year-old Dayne Hargrove of Shamrock, Texas. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph, with clear weather and dry road conditions reported at the time of the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Sequoia was traveling southbound and attempted to pass a non-involved vehicle in a no-passing zone. For unknown reasons, Tompkins moved back into the southbound lane behind the cotton stripper but failed to control his speed, rear-ending the agricultural vehicle.

Tompkins, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was initially transported to Shamrock General Hospital before being airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 23.

The driver of the John Deere cotton stripper was uninjured and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.
