A
fatal crash occurred on Saturday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m.,
along Old Route 66 Road, 4/10 mile east of County Road 2590, near
Bridgeport in Caddo County.
The
accident involved a 1956 Ford Pickup driven by 62-year-old Jimmy L.
Wilhoit of Hinton. Wilhoit was transported to Weatherford Hospital,
where he succumbed to massive injuries. Medical staff pronounced him
deceased upon arrival.
A
passenger in the vehicle, 42-year-old Clayton W. Adams of Austin,
Texas, was airlifted to OU Medical Center. Adams remains hospitalized
in critical condition with severe internal injuries to the head and
trunk.
Accident
Details
The
pickup was traveling eastbound on Old Route 66 when it encountered a
rough patch of roadway. This caused the vehicle to go into a
broadside slide, veer off the road to the south, and collide with a
utility pole and a pipe fence. Both occupants were ejected from the
vehicle before it overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
Investigation
and Contributing Factors
The
driver’s condition prior to the crash is currently unknown, and the
cause of the collision remains under investigation. The pickup was
not equipped with seatbelts. The weather at the time of the crash was
clear and dry, and the roadway was a two-lane, undivided asphalt
road.
The
collision was investigated by Trooper Brent Tucker of the Oklahoma
Highway Patrol’s Caddo County detachment, Troop G. He was assisted
at the scene by the Caddo County Sheriff’s Department, Hinton
Police and Fire Departments, Air Evac, and AMR Ambulance Service.
