Elk City, OK – Firefighters are returning to service this morning after battling a camper fire on the north side of Elk City. Crews arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke pouring from the camper, with the occupant already outside. However, three dogs remained trapped inside.

Firefighters from A-shift braved the thick smoke, making entry to rescue the animals. Once safely removed, the dogs received supplemental oxygen and are now reported to be doing well.

One individual, who attempted to reenter the camper to save the dogs, was transported by Elk City Fire Department paramedics to Great Plains Hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported. Officials determined the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.

This incident comes amid a particularly busy start to February for the department. Since February 1st, firefighters and paramedics have responded to more than 30 calls in just over 48 hours.
