A Sweetwater man was formally charged with two felonies earlier this month in Custer County after leading Clinton police on a high speed pursuit through Clinton streets before wrecking his motorcycle.

The man had a passenger on the motorcycle while the pursuit took place.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident took place on the evening of June 28 when police observed 28-year-old Robert James Hanson run a stop sign. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the court document stated that the defendant allegedly accelerated the motorcycle and led police on a high speed pursuit through the city that at one point reached 92 miles per hour.

The affidavit stated that Hanson eventually turned onto the Interstate 40 65A on-ramp before losing control and striking a guardrail.

After Hanson was taken into custody, police searched a backpack that was attached to the motorcycle. Inside, authorities allegedly found a small bag containing 8.1 grams of methamphetamine along with other paraphernalia.

Both Hanson and his passenger, 19-year-old Jazmine Wilson of Wheeler, Texas, were transported to the Alliance Health Hospital Emergency Room for injuries sustained in the accident.

Hanson was charged with one count of endangering others while eluding or attempting to elude a police officer and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled drug with the intent to distribute.

A Custer County Special judge authorized a $100,000 medical bond for Hanson who was transported to another medical facility for further treatment.
