The “People’s Convoy”, a group of truckers currently on a cross-country trip from California to the Washington D.C. area made a stop in Elk City Saturday night.

The convoy’s goal is to arrive in the nation’s capitol with plans to hold a protest demanding that all COVID 19-related mandates are lifted across the country.

Speaking to the large crowd of supporters at the old SFI yard off of Exit 40 in Elk City, Leigh Dundas, a human rights lawyer who joined the convoy in California, said she didn’t hesitate when asked to join the group’s trip to the east cost.

Chris, a long haul trucker from Tacoma, Washington, told Paragon Communications that the support has been overwhelming. Saying the convoy, which as of Saturday had grown to at least being 15 miles long while in route, has seen support of all kinds – from all ages.

The convoy is inspired by the protesters of the Freedom Convoy in Canada, who occupied Ottawa for 24 days and blocked various border crossings into the U.S. to protest the country’s pandemic restrictions, particularly the federal vaccine mandate for cross-border commercial truck drivers. A week ago, Ottawa police cleared out the remaining demonstrators, arresting 191 people and towing 57 vehicles after more than three weeks of protests. Organizers said with that in mind, the convoy’s final destination has not been announced.

The convoy plans to be in the Washington D.C. area by Saturday night.
