Elissa Saunders has been appointed as the Chair of the Department of Nursing within the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford.

Saunders brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as a registered nurse for ten years before transitioning into nursing education. Before her appointment, she taught in the areas of women’s health and nursing research before transitioning into the role of nurse administrator. Saunders earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from SWOSU in 2010 and her master’s degree in nursing education in 2017.

As Chair, Saunders oversees four nursing program tracks, including the new LPN-to-BSN online option. She will also continue her role as the director of the Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at SWOSU. Saunders’ dedication to nursing education and her extensive experience make her an excellent choice for this leadership position. SWOSU is confident that under her guidance, the nursing programs will continue to thrive.

Saunders has been a resident of Weatherford since 2002. She is married to Zack Saunders, head coach of the SWOSU baseball team, and together have two children, Isaiah and Olivia.
