More details regarding the felony charges an Elk City man was wanted on in Beckham County have emerged.

That man was fatally shot early Friday morning when police were serving a warrant for his arrest.

According to court records, 40-year-old Edwin Medina Baires was wanted in Beckham County after accumulating five felony charges between October 25 and November 30, 2021.

Those charges included two felony charges of injuring pipes or wires, where the suspect was accused of digging up utility lines that included six feet of gas line and two water meters on two separate occasions.

He also was charged with injury to highway for damage to city owned property.

Court records also show that Baires was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and domestic assault and battery in presence of a minor.

According to officials, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the officer involved shooting of Baires that occurred in the 1400 block of S. Simpson in Elk City at 6:15 Friday morning.

OSBI officials said officers made entry into the house and located Baires in the home brandishing a sharp object. Officers would make multiple attempts to convince Baires to put the weapon down, however he did not comply.

The report said that Baires would charge at the officers and one fired their weapon.

Baires was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City where he was pronounced deceased.

OSBI said the case is still under investigation.
