Now that the state budget has been approved, local counties have begun the process of drawing up a budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning says this year’s process will be a little different due to the passage of the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Office Funding Assistance Grant program which appropriates $18 million in the state budget for county sheriff’s departments.

House Bill 2914 allows counties to apply for grants ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 a year to help offset the cost of sheriff’s office operations. Grants would be awarded based on the 77 counties’ property valuation rankings. The poorest counties are entitled to higher amounts.

The measure also sets a base salary requirement for sheriffs ranging from $44,000 to $74,000.
