PSO Press Release

Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) will soon start converting leased area lights in Elk City to new technology that will improve visibility for home owners and businesses.

LED conversion of leased area lights will begin Monday, July 24, weather-permitting.

Light-emitting diode (LED) area lights are more efficient and longer-lasting than the high-intensity discharge (HID) lights they replace.

HID lights are an obsolete technology and are being phased out industry-wide. They are becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to find,” said Chris Thompson, PSO customer service manager. “For the vast majority of customers, the LED lights will mean lower costs per month.”

Unlike old-technology omnidirectional lights, the light from LEDs is more focused, meaning less of the illumination is wasted into the sky.

LED lights also take less time to warm up and will eliminate the eerie yellow glow of old high-pressure sodium lights, improving night vision efficiently.

LED lighting is clearer and improves night visibility,” said PSO External Affairs Manager Michael Hixson. “I think our customers are going to be very happy with what they see.”

The area light replacement process is the second phase in a five-year project to remove obsolete HID lighting. PSO concluded streetlight conversion to LED earlier this year. Customers with questions about LED conversion, can contact the PSO Customer Solutions Center: 1-833-PSO-POWR.
