Sayre Couple Released on Bond After Facing Child Neglect Charges

A Sayre couple was recently released from the Beckham County Detention Center following charges of child neglect.

According to court records, 34-year-old Jared Brewer and 38-year-old Ashley Flores faced charges after an investigation by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) began in early October.

The probable cause affidavit reveals that DHS contacted the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office after receiving a report alleging a minor child was “failing to thrive,” potentially due to insufficient feeding and being locked in their room. During a forensic interview with the child, authorities observed holes in the door indicating a “locking mechanism.” Brewer claimed a dog had previously been kept in the room.

The child reportedly told authorities they are allergic to cheese, milk, and chocolate and only receive a corn dog for dinner on those occasions, often leaving them hungry. The deputy noted the home had food available in the refrigerator, two freezers, and a pantry.

The report describes the child as suffering from “severe protein-calorie malnutrition due to neglect” and other health conditions, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder. The child also claimed their mother uses a derogatory name when addressing them.

Records from Red Rock indicate the child lost 26 pounds over the summer, with inconsistencies reported in Flores’s account of what the child could eat. The child was hospitalized to receive adequate nutrition and had been observed sneaking into the school kitchen for food.

In August, a doctor reportedly expressed concerns about the child’s weight, height, and development, suggesting a specialist referral, which Flores allegedly declined.

Both Brewer and Flores were released on a $10,000 bond each. Their next court appearance is scheduled for December 2.
