Cummins Starts a Little Slow in Boise

The Skinny on Sports Report on 96.5FM KECO

The first leg of the 4-week Korn Ferry Tour Finals teed off this morning in Boise, ID. Weatherford’s Quade Cummins, who has already secured his PGA Tour card for next season, played in the morning wave at HillCrest Country Club. Despite a challenging start with a 2-over on the front nine, Cummins turned things around with a 3-under back nine, finishing the day at 1-over 70. Currently tied for 71st, Cummins will need a strong performance tomorrow to make the cut in this first playoff event.

Cummins’ Season-Long Journey

Cummins stands 8th on the season-long points list coming into this week. While his PGA Tour spot is secure, a strong finish in these playoffs will bolster his status for next season.

PGA Tour Playoffs Get Started

The second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs kicked off at Castle Pines in Castle Rock, CO. Keegan Bradley currently leads the pack at 6-under, while Nick Dunlap, who qualified after a top-5 finish last week in Memphis, is tied with last week’s winner Hideki Matsuyama at 5-under. Sungjae Im, Alex Noren, Adam Scott, and Corey Conners follow closely at 4-under, with Se Woo Kim, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele at 3-under. The top 50 golfers are competing this week, with the field narrowing to the top 30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake next week.

Iowa’s Ferentz Suspended for Portal Tampering

In a somewhat surprising move, the NCAA enforcement wing has suspended Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz for the first game of the season due to tampering allegations in the transfer portal back in 2021. The incident involves the recruitment of Michigan’s Cade McNamara. Given the ongoing allegations against Michigan under Jim Harbaugh, this suspension adds an ironic twist to the NCAA’s enforcement actions. The return of the NCAA’s disciplinary actions may signal more stringent consequences ahead.
