The first week of District play in high school football across western Oklahoma brought exciting moments for some teams and challenges for others. Here’s a breakdown of how the Elk City Elks, Merritt Oilers, and other local teams fared.
Elk City Elks Dominate Cache Bulldogs
The Elk City Elks started slow but quickly found their rhythm after Cache scored on their first possession. The Bulldogs recovered an onside kick, but the Elk City defense stepped up, shutting them down on their next drive. Elk City then scored 23 unanswered points to lead 23-7 by the middle of the second quarter.
Cache responded, scoring two touchdowns, narrowing the gap to 23-21 by halftime. However, the Elks dominated the second half, outscoring Cache 13-0 and securing a 36-21 win.
Cole Buie had a stellar game, catching six passes from Logan Webb for 204 yards and a touchdown. Tucker Garza contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 176 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The victory brought Elk City’s overall record to 2-2, with a 1-0 start in District 4A-1.
Merritt Oilers Struggle Against Cashion Wildcats
In Class A’s District 1, the Merritt Oilers faced a tough road game against the Cashion Wildcats. Despite a pair of touchdowns from Hudson Dyer, the Oilers were unable to keep pace with Cashion, falling 35-12. Merritt’s record now stands at 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district play.

OU and OSU Conference Road Game Results
Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Sooners were on the road for conference play this weekend. The results were mixed, with the Cowboys struggling and the Sooners pulling off a dramatic comeback.
Oklahoma State:
The Cowboys got off to a fast start against Kansas State, but their momentum fizzled in a 42-20 loss. Despite Alan Bowman throwing for 364 yards, his two interceptions and a fumble proved costly. Kansas State racked up 300 rushing yards against the Cowboys, who now fall to 3-2 with West Virginia next up at Stillwater.
Oklahoma Sooners:
It appeared the Sooners would suffer the same fate as OSU when they trailed 21-10 heading into the fourth quarter at Auburn. But a Javonte Barnes touchdown, followed by Kip Lewis’s 63-yard Pick 6, swung the game in OU’s favor. Freshman QB Michael Hawkins led the Sooners to a 27-21 win, improving their record to 4-1. The Sooners have a bye week before the Red River Shootout.
