WEATHERFORD WINS STATE FAST PITCH TITLE

The Skinny on Sports Report on 96.5FM KECO

The Weatherford Lady Eagles achieved a major milestone in the 2024 4A Fast Pitch State Tournament, claiming their first-ever state championship title.

After shutting out the Elk City Elkettes 10-0 in the quarterfinals, they held off Tuttle with a narrow 3-2 victory in the semifinals. The championship game against Purcell was tight through the first three innings before Weatherford’s offense surged. Karsen McPerson singled home Harlie Chism in the 4th inning, giving Wford a 1-0 lead. In the 6th, Chism tripled and scored on a Maci Thain single, followed by a two-run single by Chism in the 7th, securing the Lady Eagles’ 5-0 win.

Marley Teasley’s outstanding pitching performance was crucial throughout the tournament. In 20 innings, she surrendered only two runs while striking out 29 batters and allowing just 10 hits. Her dominance in the circle was key to Weatherford’s historic victory.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL DUMPSTER FIRE IN OKLAHOMA

On the other end of the spectrum, it was a weekend to forget for Oklahoma’s college football teams.

Friday night saw Oklahoma State play admirably in Provo against undefeated BYU. After a dramatic 17-play, 76-yard drive, Alan Bowman connected with Brennan Presley for a 6-yard touchdown, giving the Cowboys a 35-31 lead with 1:13 remaining. Unfortunately, BYU responded quickly with an 8-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a game-winning 35-yard touchdown pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter. Oklahoma State dropped to 3-4 on the season and remains winless in conference play at 0-4, sinking to the bottom of the Big 12 standings.

Saturday in Norman was even worse for the Oklahoma Sooners, who fell to South Carolina 35-9. Oklahoma turned the ball over on their first three possessions, falling behind 21-0 just five minutes into the game. South Carolina capitalized with two defensive touchdowns—a scoop-and-score and a pick-six. Although the Sooners outgained South Carolina in total yardage, they couldn’t convert on the scoreboard and now sit at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play.

WORLD SERIES SET TO BEGIN FRIDAY NIGHT

Baseball fans, get ready—the 2024 World Series is set to begin this Friday night!

The New York Yankees secured their spot after a Game 5 victory over Cleveland, thanks to a Juan Soto three-run blast. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers took down the New York Mets in six games, winning 10-5 in Game 6.

This will mark the 12th time these two iconic franchises meet in the World Series, with the Yankees holding an 8-3 advantage in previous matchups. Some of the most memorable moments in baseball history have occurred between these two teams: Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956, Reggie Jackson’s three home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 series, and Fernando Valenzuela’s meteoric rise in 1981. This year’s showdown between stars Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge promises to add even more history. Game 1 will be played Friday at Dodger Stadium.
